One of the country’s largest hotel chains, Premier Inn, has announced it intends to open a new hotel in Beverley. The consortium behind the multi-million pound Flemingate regeneration has confirmed it has entered into an agreement with the company to construct an 80-bed hotel on the new development.
The news comes soon after the developers submitted their detailed planning application to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and follows the announcement from High Street store group Debenhams that it was to be the site’s anchor retailer by signing up to the largest single retail unit at 40,000 sq.ft.
The Flemingate regeneration scheme is the biggest single project of its kind in the history of the market town. In addition to the hotel, the plans include a new Beverley campus for the East Riding College, a five-screen cinema, a multi-storey car park with space for 486 cars, a range of retail units, 20,000 sq.ft. of office accommodation, restaurants and a Community Centre.
The scheme is to be developed by a consortium consisting of the Hull-based Wykeland Group, The C P Group, of Hessle, and Quintain Estates and Developments PLC.
Wykeland’s Managing Director, Dominic Gibbons, said: The hotel announcement is excellent news for the development. Having secured two such well known brands as Premier Inn and Debenhams at this very early stage shows how important the Flemingate project is to potential occupiers, to attracting more shoppers and tourists into Beverley and to the local economy in general.
The hotel is expected to bring 50 new jobs to the town and will provide much-needed additional accommodation for business users and tourists. The Flemingate development as a whole will account for between 700 and 800 jobs plus a further 320 during the construction phase.
Last month, the consortium organised a private preview of its proposals for local residents, followed by a public exhibition. Dominic Gibbons said: The response to our scheme has been very positive. People have been especially keen to learn more about the type of retailer and operator we can expect to see.
