Work to start on Northallerton Cinema

Work starts on Northallerton’s exciting new Everyman Cinema complex early next month.

It is the last piece of the £17m Treadmills development which has seen the former Northallerton Prison transformed into a retail, leisure and business destination.

Contractors, PDR Construction, will move on to the site on October 4, to create the four screen cinema and adjoining restaurant units which are expected to open their doors next summer. It is being part funded with £4.75m from the Government’s Future High Street Fund which was awarded to NorthaIlerton earlier this year.

The Treadmills scheme has been delivered by the Central Northallerton Development Company Ltd (CNDCL), a joint venture between Hambleton District Council and leading Yorkshire developer Wykeland Group.

Councillor Mark Robson is pictured with Jonathan Stubbs from Wykeland, Paul Dransfield and Paul Russell from PDR Construction and Tricia Kane, Deputy Area Lead for the Cities and Local Growth Unit.

“The cinema is the last part of the Treadmills development so we are very excited that work is about to start,” said Hambleton District Council Leader, Councillor Mark Robson.

“We know a cinema will be a much welcome addition to our county town and that it brings a new option for both residents and visitors who are having a day or evening out in Northallerton.  The arrival of the cinema clearly demonstrates this council’s commitment to developing and enhancing our market towns.

“We hope it will encourage more people to come into Northallerton to see a film, have a meal and visit the high street.”

Andrew Rayner, Commercial Director for Everyman, added: “All of us at Everyman are excited to introduce Northallerton to our unique take on cinema. Our new destination venue will house four screens and a total of 276 seats, right in the heart of the exciting Treadmills development, bringing a varied programme of films and events all served up in our signature Everyman style.

“We look forward to spoiling you with our personalized service, luxurious sofa seating, sophisticated cocktails and our famous Spielburger menu. Join us next summer for cinema reimagined.”

Jonathan Stubbs, Development Director of Wykeland Group, said: “The start of work on the new Everyman cinema is the latest important milestone for the thriving Treadmills development.  It will provide a high quality viewing experience for customers and will be another exceptional attraction for visitors to Northallerton, to further boost the local economy.

“With this latest phase of construction also including the creation of three new restaurants, these are extremely exciting times for the town.”

Paul Dransfield, Managing Director of PDR Construction Ltd, added: “PDR is delighted to have been selected as construction partners on the last phase of Treadmills.  With our experience in this sector and work with Wykeland for the last decade we look forward to creating part of Northallerton that will be a massive community asset.”

The Treadmills project also features the digital innovation centre, C4DI, shops Lidl and Iceland and a new educational campus, C@N.   The development is also being supported by the York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, which has secured investment of £1.8m from the Government’s Local Growth Fund for the redevelopment and fit-out of C4DI and a further £675,000 from the Government’s Getting Building Fund for the Campus@Northallerton.
